Household trash in Tupelo is collected by WM (Waste Management of Mississippi) under contract with the city. WM supplies each home a 96-gallon cart and empties it twice a week. Your pickup days depend on your address. The monthly garbage charge appears on your Tupelo Water & Light bill.

Your pickup days

WM sets service days by route. To see yours, enter your street address on WM’s Tupelo page. The page then shows your next pickup.

WM’s rules for the cart:

  • Put it at the street with the wheels against the curb by 7 a.m. on collection days.
  • Keep it at least 3 feet from parked cars, mailboxes and anything else that could stop the truck from reaching it.
  • Bring it back in the same day.
  • Additional carts are available for a fee; call WM.

Missed pickups

If your cart was at the curb on time and was not emptied, WM says to report it online. A “Report Missed Pickup for Prior Service” link appears under “Next Pickup” on WM’s page after 6 p.m. on your service day and stays up for 72 hours. WM will not schedule a missed pickup if the cart was not out or was blocked when the truck came by.

Holidays

WM does not collect on the holidays on its holiday schedule. If a holiday falls on your pickup day, your trash is picked up on your next regularly scheduled pickup day after the observed holiday. Thanksgiving falls Thursday, Nov. 26, and Christmas Day on a Friday this year; check WM’s schedule the week before.

Brush and large items: the city’s monthly routes

The city’s Public Works Department, not WM, collects brush and large debris. Its brush policy says:

  • The city is divided into 28 brush routes that cover every city-maintained street about once a month. In the busy season, April through September, the average is about four weeks between visits.
  • The department does not take call-in requests and has no public dump site.
  • Daily routes are posted the week before, normally on the Friday, on the Tupelo Public Works Facebook page.

What the city picks up: brush and limbs, furniture such as couches, tables and chairs, mattresses, old fencing and grills with the gas bottle removed.

How to set it out:

  • Use several small piles or one long pile at the street.
  • Keep brush and large items in separate piles, and keep household trash out of them.
  • Do not block traffic, a driveway, a sidewalk or the view of the road.
  • Keep piles off storm drains, fire hydrants and water meters, and out from under low power lines and low limbs.
  • If the pile is small enough to pick up by hand, put it in your trash cart instead.

What the city will not pick up: bagged or boxed items, bagged or loose leaves and pine needles, household trash, paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste, batteries, tires, shingles, rocks, bricks or concrete, building material from remodeling, demolition or fire damage, anything with glass or mirrors, items with gas or electric motors, lawn equipment and dead animals.

The program does not serve commercial property, apartment complexes, vacant lots, new construction sites, contractors or professional tree and lawn services. Those jobs need a private hauler.

Bagged leaves and small debris

WM handles bagged leaves and small bagged or boxed debris. Use bags no larger than a lawn leaf bag, set them at the curb next to your WM cart and call 662-844-5523 to schedule the pickup.

Recycling

The city’s brush policy lists WM, 662-844-5523, as the contact for recycling. WM’s Tupelo page does not list a separate curbside recycling cart, so call WM to ask what service is available at your address before you sort.

Paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste

These cannot go in the cart or the brush pile. The city’s policy refers residents to the Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority, 662-489-2415, which serves Lee County and holds household hazardous waste collection days for the counties it covers. Call for the next date and location.

Landfills

For loads you haul yourself, the city’s brush policy lists two disposal sites:

  • T.M.C.O., Birmingham Ridge Road, 662-869-2151
  • Lee County Solid Waste, Skyline community, 662-844-2003

Call ahead for hours and what each site accepts.

Dead animals

For a dead domestic animal, call the Tupelo Police Department’s animal control line at 662-871-1963. For a large animal, such as a deer, blocking a city street, call Public Works at 662-841-6457.

What this means for you

  • Look up your two pickup days on WM’s site once, and set a reminder.
  • Watch the Public Works Facebook page for your brush route, and have the pile out before the crew arrives.
  • Bag leaves for WM; the city’s brush trucks will not take them.
