MDOT’s listing does not give a reason beyond road work and does not name a detour, and we could not find an MDOT release with one as of Oct. 26. Checking before you drive

MDOTtraffic.com and the MDOT Traffic app show state highway and interstate construction, closures, crashes and traffic cameras in real time. In Tupelo, the state system includes I-22 and U.S. 78, U.S. 45, U.S. 278, Highway 6 and Highway 145 (Gloster Street). Problems on those roads go to MDOT, not the city.

City streets

The City of Tupelo’s Public Works Department maintains about 343 miles of city streets, apart from MDOT and federal rights of way inside the city. The city’s website had no street closure notices posted when we checked Oct. 27. Its divisions:

  • Streets: potholes, driveway tie-ins, pavement repairs, milling and overlay, and curb and gutter replacement.
  • Drainage: building and maintaining storm drainage.
  • Grounds: the city’s tree farm on South Lawndale Road.

The city’s website links the CodeRED alert system; sign up to get emergency and community alerts by text, call or email. Brush routes are posted on the Tupelo Public Works Facebook page.

The Major Thoroughfare Program

Tupelo’s big street projects are paid for through the Major Thoroughfare Program, a dedicated property tax that voters first approved in 1991 and have renewed every five years since, according to the city. Phase VII, put to voters in a special election Feb. 2, 2021, listed projects including:

  • West Jackson Street from Airpark Road to Joyner Avenue, and East Jackson Street from Madison Street to Front Street
  • Eason Boulevard from South Veterans Memorial Boulevard to Briar Ridge Road
  • North Veterans Boulevard from East Main Street to I-22
  • Airpark Road from West Main Street to West Jackson Street
  • Elizabeth Street from East Main Street to Green Street
  • A new road from West Barnes Crossing Road to the west side of Gloster Street
  • Realigning McPherson Road with Highway 6
  • A redesigned intersection at U.S. 45, McCullough Boulevard and Hilda Avenue

The Tupelo Major Thoroughfare Committee meets the second Monday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 71 E. Troy St., according to the city’s committee schedule. The Engineering Division at Public Works has the current agenda.
