When to go

With no city hours, the timing is up to each neighborhood. A porch light on is the usual sign that a house is handing out candy. Some subdivisions and homeowners associations set their own times; check your association’s notices or neighborhood group.

If the city announces hours or a change of date before Oct. 31, we will update this page.

Trunk-or-treats

Trunk-or-treats, where volunteers hand out candy from decorated car trunks in a church or school parking lot, are a big part of Halloween in Tupelo and across Lee County. Most are held in the evenings in the last week or two of October and are free.

We list a trunk-or-treat here only when its host has published the date, time and place. None had done so in a public listing we could confirm by Oct. 26. Your church, your children’s school and your employer are the best places to ask. Organizers can send us their details.

Other Halloween fun

  • Pumpkin patch at Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo, 2272 Coley Road: every day through Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, the park says. Information: 662-844-8709.
  • Huddleween at Huddle House, 3760 S. Eason Blvd.: kids eat free with an adult entree of $8 or more, dine-in only, Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, according to the Visit Tupelo listing.

  • Terror on the Trace, a free ranger-led evening walk through the Natchez Trace’s true stories of murder and mayhem, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, from the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center lot. Free tickets must be reserved on Eventbrite and places are limited. The Park Service recommends it for ages 15 and up, according to the Visit Tupelo listing and the parkway’s events calendar.

Safety

  • Go out with an adult, carry a flashlight and wear reflective tape or light colors.
  • Use sidewalks where there are some, cross at corners and walk facing traffic where there are none.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods in the evening and watch for children crossing between parked cars.
  • Check treats at home before children eat them, and throw out anything unwrapped.
  • Keep pets inside; costumes and doorbells stress many dogs.
  • Check the National Weather Service forecast for Oct. 31 before you plan.

What this means for you
